Last month, Dr Ewan Robertson – a research fellow on Studying Parliaments and the Role of Knowledge (SPARK) – met with staff from the Oficina C, the Spanish Congress of Deputies’ Science and Technology Office.
Taking place within the Congress of Deputies in Madrid, the meeting was an opportunity to exchange information about the SPARK project and the work of the Oficina C, which was established in 2021.
Ewan, who is responsible for SPARK’s research on the Spanish and Catalan parliaments, presented the context and focus of the research project, which runs from 2024-2029. A central objective is to better understand how parliaments gather, use and interpret knowledge, as well as the impact of knowledge practices on parliaments’ democratic functions.
Likewise, Oficina C staff who were in attendance – including one of the two coordinators, Dr Ana Elorza – explained the methods, work and engagement programmes of the new institution.
The meeting forms part of ongoing knowledge exchange activities by SPARK, which links to the objective of informing practice and building a network of stakeholders with an interest in parliaments and knowledge-use.
Through its research SPARK will produce new insights into knowledge use in parliamentary settings in Spain, as well as other selected parliaments in Europe (the European parliament, and national and sub-national parliaments in the United Kingdom and Germany).
